With the greying of the population across America, God's church has a strategic opportunity to value, affirm and motivate seniors to be involved in ministry. Today, people age 50 and over comprise 24 percent of the U.S. population, while 17 million Americans are between the ages of 75 and 85. Our Senior Adult Ministry seeks to honor God by providing opportunities for senior adults to grow spiritually, fellowship with one another and reach lost and unchurched senior adults in the community. Through Bible studies, outreach opportunities and involvement in various ministries, this growing ministry encourages senior adults not to "retire" in their service to Christ. Millersburg Church of God wants to put into practice the words of Hebrews 10:25, which instructs us, “. . . not forsaking the assembling of ourselves togethers, as the manner some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Why “Higher Ground as a name for our group? The term originated during warfare because to have the higher ground was to have an advantage on your enemies. Job 12:12 says, "With the ancient is wisdom; and in the length of days understanding. Through this "aged" wisdom we have gained deeper faith and trust in the Lord and we are steadily moving towards “Higher Ground away from the temptations of Satan. Our ministry also seeks to reach the lost and unchurched of our peers. “Higher ground currently applies to all situations where you are trying to improve your situation. We believe that by the sheer population of seniors, we are the greatest human resource the Church has for completing the task of the Great Commission – to find the lost among us and bring them along the path Jesus Christ paved for all us to reach Higher Ground.
For those of us in the Baby Boomer generation, we have not lost the chance to bring change to the World. We began our adult lives simply wanting to make a difference through love and peace but got caught up in raising our families, climbing the corporate ladder, and achieving the material successes of the great American dream. We forgot about a great eternal destiny that had been set before our generation. Higher Ground believes that destiny—that God given purpose for life—is still available to Boomers who want to give the second half of their lives to God’s purposes. A major part of our purpose is to be involved in meaningful acts of service. Psalm 92:13-14 says, "Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing." (For clarification, "fat" here means full of sap and green, to be fresh - not to be overweight, although, for some of us, that may also apply! lol )Â
As both an opportunity for group fellowship through travel and a source for fundraising to benefit the Food Pantry, Higher Ground Senior Adult Ministry will schedule several short term trips throughout the year. Every effort will be made to make the trips affordable while adding a small amount to the total cost to be donated to the Food Pantry. Our goal is to have a one-day trip each month for three months, with an extended 2-3 day trip the fourth month. Please give us suggestions of places you have always wanted to visit but did not want to make the trip by yourself.
It has been said, “Sixty is the new forty! and “Life begins at 60! If you are a senior, you are in some of the best years of your life. Remain active in it and serve God with the gifts, talents, and abilities He has blessed you with. Are you 60 or over (or closer to it than you care to admit) - then you’re invited to become
a part of our Higher Ground Senior Ministry, a group where you’ll feel loved,
accepted, encouraged, and valued. Come be a part of this vibrant and active
     ministry.
